AFM Safecoat Zero VOC Semi-Gloss Interior Enamel

AFM Safecoat Zero VOC Semi-Gloss is a zero VOC semi-gloss paint for trim, doors, woodwork and walls that need a durable, cleanable finish: a fast-curing interior enamel with good film formation and the highest sheen in the Safecoat Zero VOC line. It also works on ceilings and primed metal, in any room where you want to keep chemical exposure low.

AFM formulates Safecoat paints for optimal indoor air quality. The paint is zero VOC and contains no formaldehyde, ammonia, aromatic hydrocarbon compounds, exempt solvents or hazardous air pollutants, so it is a common choice for homes, schools, hospitals and offices and for people with chemical sensitivities.

For the best finish, prime first: use Safecoat New Wallboard Primer on new drywall and Safecoat Transitional Primer on previously painted surfaces in poor condition and on porous new wood, then apply two finish coats. Clean surfaces first with SafeChoice All-Purpose Cleaner (formerly Super Clean).

Choosing a sheen in the Safecoat Zero VOC line, from lowest to highest: Flat, Pearl, Eggshell and Semi-Gloss. Higher sheens are generally easier to wipe clean; lower sheens hide surface imperfections better. Other sheens in the same line: Flat, Pearl, Eggshell.

Colors

Search the Color IS color chart by color name or number, or open the chart and click a swatch: the color's number and name then show next to the size you chose. Colors are tinted in 1 gallon cans; for 5 gallons of one color, order five 1-gallon cans. You can also enter another brand's color code. We tint with the AFM base your color requires, and the price shown includes the tinting charge. Tinted paint is made to order, adds about 5-10 business days, and cannot be returned. Colors from other brands are matched by computer formula and are close, but not guaranteed to be exact.

Sheen

  • Semi-gloss

Sizes

  • 1 quart (Pure White)
  • 1 gallon (Pure White or tinted)
  • 5 gallon (Pure White)

Use On

New or existing, properly primed interior walls and ceilings, properly cured and primed plaster (below 10 pH), masonry, woodwork and primed metal.

Coverage

One gallon of Safecoat Zero VOC Semi-Gloss covers approximately 300-400 square feet, depending on surface porosity.

Drying/Curing Time

Under normal conditions, wait a minimum of 4 hours before recoating. The paint cures and bonds over a full 7-day period. Normal conditions include a dry surface, fresh air flow, 30-70% relative humidity and temperatures of 55-85°F. Thick application, high humidity or other conditions will slow drying and curing.

Clean-Up

Clean tools and equipment while still wet with warm soapy water. Store unused paint in an airtight container. To dispose of leftover paint, let it dry out first (add kitty litter in the can, or roll it out on cardboard). Do not pour paint down a sink or toilet.

Thinning

For spraying only: reduce with up to 1/2 pint of water per gallon as needed.

Surface Preparation

Surfaces must be clean, dry and free of dirt, grease, mildew and oil. Sand and clean before painting. Prime new drywall with Safecoat New Wallboard Primer; scrape and sand previously painted surfaces in poor condition, then prime with Safecoat Transitional Primer. Block water and tannin stains so they do not bleed through. Always spot test for adhesion over existing coatings.

Application

Always use adequate ventilation. Stir well before use, then apply with a high-quality nylon or synthetic brush, a roller (1/4"-3/8" nap) or an airless sprayer. Apply thin coats; do not load paint onto the surface. When spraying, use a 17/1000 to 21/1000 reversible tip and 30-mesh high-pressure filter, spray 18" from the surface, overlap each pass by 1/4 to 1/2 of the fan width, and always wear a painter's mask.

Physical Data

VOC: 0 g/L (material). HAPs: zero. Low odor, mildly alkaline, white. Water dilutable.

Limitations

Interior use. Do not paint when the indoor temperature is under 55°F, and protect the paint from freezing. Safecoat paints contain no formaldehyde preservatives, so keep the can sealed and avoid contaminating it. Ideal conditions are 55-85°F and 30-70% relative humidity on a dry surface; see the Safety Data Sheet for handling and storage.

Health Precautions

As with all coatings, keep the container tightly closed and out of the reach of children. Do not take internally. Always use adequate ventilation, and wear a painter's mask when spraying. If you are chemically sensitive, always test for personal tolerance.

Limited Liability

Safecoat products are guaranteed not to be defective when properly applied. Liability express or implied is limited to replacement of product or refund of purchase price and does not include liability for labor costs or consequential damages. Variable factors out of manufacturer's control, such as environmental conditions, application techniques, and surface conditions are critical to results obtained. Users are expected to exercise reasonable care to determine suitability of the product for each application. We particularly recommend that users always test in small inconspicuous areas before applying to the entire surface.
