AFM Safecoat Zero VOC Flat Interior Paint
AFM Safecoat Zero VOC Flat is a zero VOC flat paint for interior walls, ceilings and other primed interior surfaces when you want a true flat look: AFM rates its sheen at 0-5 on a 60-degree gloss meter, the lowest in the Safecoat Zero VOC line. It forms a smooth, even film and suits any room where keeping chemical exposure low matters to you.
Every Safecoat paint is built around healthier indoor air. This one is zero VOC, and AFM formulates it without formaldehyde, ammonia, aromatic hydrocarbon compounds, exempt solvents or hazardous air pollutants. That is why it is often specified for homes, schools, hospitals and offices, and chosen by people who react to conventional paint.
Start with clean, primed surfaces and finish with two coats. Wash surfaces with SafeChoice All-Purpose Cleaner (formerly Super Clean), prime new drywall with Safecoat New Wallboard Primer, and use Safecoat Transitional Primer on porous new wood or on previously painted surfaces in poor condition.
Choosing a sheen in the Safecoat Zero VOC line, from lowest to highest: Flat, Pearl, Eggshell and Semi-Gloss. Higher sheens are generally easier to wipe clean; lower sheens hide surface imperfections better. Other sheens in the same line: Pearl, Eggshell, Semi-Gloss.
Colors
Search the Color IS color chart by color name or number, or open the chart and click a swatch: the color's number and name then show next to the size you chose. Colors are tinted in 1 gallon cans; for 5 gallons of one color, order five 1-gallon cans. You can also enter another brand's color code. We tint with the AFM base your color requires, and the price shown includes the tinting charge. Tinted paint is made to order, adds about 5-10 business days, and cannot be returned. Colors from other brands are matched by computer formula and are close, but not guaranteed to be exact.

Sizes
- 1 quart (Pure White)
- 1 gallon (Pure White or tinted)
- 5 gallon (Pure White)
Use On
New or existing interior walls and ceilings that have been properly primed; plaster that is fully cured, primed and below pH 10; masonry; woodwork; and primed metal.
Coverage
Expect roughly 300-400 square feet per gallon. Porous surfaces fall toward the low end of that range.
Drying/Curing Time
Allow at least 4 hours between coats. Full cure and bond take 7 days. These times assume a dry surface, moving fresh air, 30-70% relative humidity and 55-85°F; heavy coats, damp air or cooler conditions will lengthen them.
Clean-Up
Wash brushes, rollers and equipment in warm, soapy water before the paint dries on them. Keep leftover paint in a sealed, airtight container. If you need to discard it, let it harden first, either by mixing kitty litter into the can or by rolling it onto cardboard, and never pour paint into a sink or toilet.
Thinning
Only when spraying: add water as needed, up to 1/2 pint per gallon.
Surface Preparation
Sand, then remove dirt, grease, mildew and oil; the surface must be completely dry. New drywall takes Safecoat New Wallboard Primer. Previously painted surfaces in poor condition should be scraped and sanded smooth, then primed with Safecoat Transitional Primer, as should porous new wood. Seal off water and tannin stains so they cannot bleed through, and spot test adhesion over any existing coating.
Application
Ventilate the room well. Stir thoroughly, then apply with a quality nylon or synthetic brush, a roller with a 1/4"-3/8" nap, or an airless sprayer. Several thin coats beat one heavy coat; avoid loading paint onto the surface. For airless spraying, fit a reversible 17/1000 to 21/1000 tip and a 30-mesh high-pressure filter, hold the gun about 18" away, overlap each pass by 1/4 to 1/2 of the fan, and wear a painter's mask.
Physical Data
VOC: 0 g/L (material). HAPs: zero. Sheen at 60°: 0-5. Low odor, mildly alkaline, white. Dilutable with water.
Limitations
Interior use only. Do not paint when the indoor or surface temperature is below 55°F, and do not let the paint freeze. Because Safecoat is made without formaldehyde preservatives, keep the can free of contamination and closed airtight between uses. Best results come at 55-85°F and 30-70% relative humidity on a dry surface.
Health Precautions
Keep the can tightly closed and away from children, and do not swallow the paint. Provide good ventilation while you work and wear a painter's mask when spraying. If you are chemically sensitive, test for personal tolerance before you commit to a whole room.
Limited Liability
Safecoat products are guaranteed not to be defective when properly applied. Liability express or implied is limited to replacement of product or refund of purchase price and does not include liability for labor costs or consequential damages. Variable factors out of manufacturer's control, such as environmental conditions, application techniques, and surface conditions are critical to results obtained. Users are expected to exercise reasonable care to determine suitability of the product for each application. We particularly recommend that users always test in small inconspicuous areas before applying to the entire surface.
