AFM Safecoat Zero VOC Eggshell Interior Enamel

AFM Safecoat Zero VOC Eggshell is a zero VOC eggshell paint: a premium, quick-curing interior enamel that lays down a smooth, low-luster eggshell sheen with strong film build. Use it on walls, ceilings, woodwork, trim and primed metal anywhere you want a soft sheen while keeping chemical exposure to a minimum.

Safecoat paints are designed around healthy indoor air. This eggshell has zero VOC content, and AFM formulates it without formaldehyde, ammonia, aromatic hydrocarbon compounds, exempt solvents or hazardous air pollutants. That makes it a frequent pick for households, schools, healthcare buildings and offices, and for anyone with chemical sensitivities.

For the most even result, use a primer and then two finish coats. On new drywall, start with Safecoat New Wallboard Primer. On porous new wood, or on old paint that has been scraped and sanded smooth, prime with Safecoat Transitional Primer. AFM suggests cleaning first with an odorless, dye-free cleaner such as SafeChoice All-Purpose Cleaner (formerly Super Clean).

Prefer a different sheen? The same Zero VOC line also comes in Flat, Pearl and Semi-Gloss.

Choosing a sheen in the Safecoat Zero VOC line, from lowest to highest: Flat, Pearl, Eggshell and Semi-Gloss. Higher sheens are generally easier to wipe clean; lower sheens hide surface imperfections better. Other sheens in the same line: Flat, Pearl, Semi-Gloss.

Colors

Search the Color IS color chart by color name or number, or open the chart and click a swatch: the color's number and name then show next to the size you chose. Colors are tinted in 1 gallon cans; for 5 gallons of one color, order five 1-gallon cans. You can also enter another brand's color code. We tint with the AFM base your color requires, and the price shown includes the tinting charge. Tinted paint is made to order, adds about 5-10 business days, and cannot be returned. Colors from other brands are matched by computer formula and are close, but not guaranteed to be exact.

Sheen

  • Eggshell

Sizes

  • 1 quart (Pure White)
  • 1 gallon (Pure White or tinted)
  • 5 gallon (Pure White)

Use On

Interior walls and ceilings (new or previously painted) once properly primed, plaster that has fully cured and been primed (pH under 10), masonry, woodwork and primed metal.

Coverage

Expect roughly 300-400 square feet per gallon; more porous surfaces fall toward the low end.

Drying/Curing Time

Allow at least 4 hours between coats. Full cure and bond take 7 days. These times assume a dry surface, fresh air movement, 30-70% relative humidity and 55-85°F; heavy coats, high humidity or other less-than-ideal conditions slow drying and curing.

Clean-Up

Wash brushes, rollers and equipment in warm, soapy water before the paint dries. Keep leftover paint in an airtight container to use later. To throw paint away, first let it harden (stir kitty litter into the can, or spread it on cardboard to dry). Never pour paint into a sink or toilet.

Thinning

Only when spraying: add water as needed, up to 1/2 pint per gallon.

Surface Preparation

Sand, then remove dirt, grease, mildew and oil; the surface must be fully dry before you paint. Prime new drywall with Safecoat New Wallboard Primer. Scrape and sand worn previously painted surfaces smooth, and sand porous new wood, then prime either with Safecoat Transitional Primer. Seal off water stains and tannin stains so they cannot bleed into the finish, and spot test adhesion wherever you paint over an older coating.

Application

Ventilate the space well. Mix thoroughly, then brush with a good nylon or synthetic brush, roll with a 1/4"-3/8" nap, or spray with an airless rig. Several thin coats give a better film than one heavy coat, so avoid flooding the surface. For airless spraying, fit a reversible tip sized 17/1000 to 21/1000 and a 30-mesh high-pressure filter, hold the gun about 18" away, overlap each pass by 1/4 to 1/2 of the fan, and wear a painter's mask.

Physical Data

VOC: 0 g/L (material). HAPs: zero. Low odor, mildly alkaline, white. Water dilutable.

Limitations

Interior use. Do not paint when the indoor temperature is under 55°F, and protect the paint from freezing. Safecoat paints contain no formaldehyde preservatives, so keep the can sealed and avoid contaminating it. Ideal conditions are 55-85°F and 30-70% relative humidity on a dry surface; see the Safety Data Sheet for handling and storage.

Health Precautions

As with any coating, keep the can tightly closed and away from children, and do not swallow. Provide good ventilation, and wear a painter's mask when spraying. People with chemical sensitivities should test the paint for personal tolerance before use.

Limited Liability

Safecoat products are guaranteed not to be defective when properly applied. Liability express or implied is limited to replacement of product or refund of purchase price and does not include liability for labor costs or consequential damages. Variable factors out of manufacturer's control, such as environmental conditions, application techniques, and surface conditions are critical to results obtained. Users are expected to exercise reasonable care to determine suitability of the product for each application. We particularly recommend that users always test in small inconspicuous areas before applying to the entire surface.
