Reduce Toxic Off-Gassing with AFM Safecoat Safe Seal
The AFM Safecoat Safe Seal is used primarily to reduce toxic out-gassing: in particular, it is highly effective at sealing in formaldehyde off-gassing from processed wood such as plywood, particle board, and pressed wood. It is virtually odorless on application and odorless once cured. This safe seal product is a multi-use, water-based, low gloss sealer for highly porous interior surfaces such as particle board, plywood, processed wood, and porous concrete.- Containing 12 g/l VOCs, this low VOC sealant meets or exceeds all federal and state air quality regulations, including California.
Usage
Porous surfaces such as processed wood products, concrete, wood, new drywall and plaster. Test surfaces first in inconspicuous areas to be sure product absorbs into surfaces completely. Excellent at controlling emissions of open faced and faced fiberglass batt insulation, simply fog spray surfaces. Safecoat Safe Seal’s superior adhesion to a variety of surfaces allows for its use as a bonding primer to improve the adhesion and bonding power of adhesives and coatings on difficult surfaces. For example, apply a thin coat to the slab and bottom of the tile before laying floor tile adhesive (in this application no cure period is necessary; the adhesive may be applied while the Safe Seal is still tacky). One gallon of Safecoat Safe Seal covers approximately 350 square feet in one coat depending on surface porosity.Surface Preparation
All surfaces must be clean and free from dirt, dust, grease, wax, oil, silicone, tsp/soap, mill scale, oxidation, loose peeling paint or varnish, or any foreign matter/contaminants. Apply test patches before undertaking large areas to assure good adhesion and lack of surface contamination.Application
To assist in quick curing/drying, bring adequate ventilation and air flow to the work area. Before using, stir Safecoat Safe Seal thoroughly but without excessive agitation so as to avoid air bubbles. Then apply as is, using a brush, roller, sponge or appropriate spray equipment. Apply in thin coats. For most jobs, reducing this product should not be necessary. Milky appearance, dries clear. As the flexible membrane created by Safe Seal remains slightly tacky even when cured, surfaces treated with Safe Seal should generally be coated with a finish coating. For best results, this product should not be reduced. Note: these instructions are intended to be general only and not exhaustive. The applicator should determine what preparation and techniques are best suited to the specific surface.Clean Up
Clean tools and equipment while still wet with a solution of SafeChoice Super Clean and warm water. Drying/Curing Time: Under normal conditions, Safecoat Safe Seal dries to touch in one hour or less and can be top-coated (or if the surface is still porous recoated with another coat of Safe Seal) after 2 hours. Normal conditions include a dry surface, access to fresh air flow, moderate humidity and temperatures above 55 degrees F. Thick application, high humidity or conditions other than the norm will cause Safecoat Safe Seal to dry and cure more slowly.Limitations
Unlike conventional sealers, Safecoat sealers are made without formaldehyde preservatives or toxic mildewicides or funigicides. Do not contaminate. Store in airtight containers. Do not use when indoor or surface temperature is below 55 degrees F. Do not freeze.Health Precautions
As with all coatings and sealers, keep container tightly closed and out of the reach of children. Do not take internally. Always use adequate ventilation. If you are chemically sensitive, always test for personal tolerance.Limited Liability
Safecoat products are guaranteed not to be defective when properly applied. Liability express or implied is limited to replacement of product or refund of purchase price and does not include liability for labor costs or consequential damages. Variable factors out of manufacturers control, such as environmental conditions, application techniques, and surface conditions are critical to results obtained. Users are expected to exercise reasonable care to determine suitability of the product for each application. This limited warranty may not be modified or extended by manufacturers representatives, distributors or dealers of AFM products. Always test in small, inconspicuous areas before application to the entire surface.More Information about AFM Safecoat Safe Seal
