AFM Safecoat EcoLacq Sandable Wood Primer
AFM Safecoat EcoLacq Sandable Primer is a water-based, sandable white primer for bare wood cabinets, doors, paneling, furniture and wood railings, made to go under a lacquer-style topcoat such as EcoLacq Gloss or Matte. It can be sanded and recoated within a few hours of application.
With 10 g/L VOC, zero hazardous air pollutants, low odor and no formaldehyde preservatives, it is a good fit for homes where people are sensitive to chemicals. As with any coating, test a small amount first for personal tolerance.
AFM's EcoLacq spec sheet calls for raw wood to be primed with this product, and allowed to dry completely, before applying Safecoat EcoLacq Gloss or Safecoat EcoLacq Matte. This primer is not meant for painted surfaces; for previously painted wood under EcoLacq, AFM points to Safecoat Transitional Primer instead.

Sizes
Use On
Unfinished (bare) wood such as cabinets, doors, paneling, furniture and railings.
Do Not Use On
Metal, glass, plastic, vinyl, laminate, concrete, brick, stone or fabric, and any surface that already has paint on it. For a surface not listed here, try a sample area first to confirm adhesion and coverage.
Coverage
Approximately 350 square feet per gallon.
Drying/Curing Time
Ready to sand and recoat in 4-6 hours under normal conditions, and the film continues to harden over time. Normal conditions mean a dry surface, moving fresh air, moderate humidity and about 70°F. Heavy coats, high humidity or other conditions slow drying and curing.
Clean-Up
Wash tools and equipment in warm soapy water while the primer is still wet.
Surface Preparation
Remove dirt, grease, mildew and oil, and make sure the wood is completely dry before priming.
Application
Always provide adequate ventilation. To avoid air bubbles, mix by stirring gently or rolling the container, and stir thoroughly again every 20 minutes while working. Pour what you need into a separate container so the main can stays clean. Apply with a good nylon brush, a pad applicator or an unheated sprayer, keeping a wet edge and not overworking the coat. For spraying, use a .015 tip or smaller and build thin, even coats, since heavy coats tend to sag; if the spray starts to dry before it lands, lower the air pressure and raise the fluid flow. Sand between coats with aluminum oxide or silicon carbide paper. Use as supplied (do not thin), in low to moderate humidity.
Physical Data
VOC: 10 g/L (material), 24 g/L (less water). HAPs: zero. Low odor, mildly alkaline, white. Volatile content 56.89% by volume and 44.91% by weight. Water dilutable.
Limitations
Do not apply when the indoor temperature is below 55°F. Do not freeze, and do not contaminate the product.
Health Precautions
Store the can tightly sealed where children can't reach it, never swallow the product, and do not let it freeze. Work with good ventilation. People with chemical sensitivities should test their personal tolerance before using it.
Limited Liability
Safecoat products are guaranteed not to be defective when properly applied. Liability express or implied is limited to replacement of product or refund of purchase price and does not include liability for labor costs or consequential damages. Variable factors out of manufacturer's control, such as environmental conditions, application techniques, and surface conditions are critical to results obtained. Users are expected to exercise reasonable care to determine suitability of the product for each application. We particularly recommend that users always test in small inconspicuous areas before applying to the entire surface.
