AFM Safecoat EcoLacq Matte Cabinet & Furniture Paint
AFM Safecoat EcoLacq Matte is a water-based matte cabinet paint: a pigmented finish for woodwork that gives a hard, low-sheen surface (5-10 on a 60-degree gloss meter) in place of a solvent lacquer. It is aimed at cabinets, doors, paneling, furniture and wood railings, and it can go over bare wood or over an earlier finish once the right primer is in place.
EcoLacq Matte shares the Gloss formula's credentials: it is water-based with a mild odor, made without formaldehyde preservatives or hazardous air pollutants, and listed at 74 g/L VOC on AFM's 2025 spec sheet. AFM reports that it seals in outgassing from the wood underneath and stands up to stains, marring and fingerprints, which suits a low-sheen finish on furniture and cabinet doors that are handled every day. People with chemical sensitivities use it too; test for personal tolerance first.
Prime before you finish: bare wood takes Safecoat EcoLacq Sandable Primer, which has to be fully dry before the EcoLacq goes on, and surfaces that were painted before take Safecoat Transitional Primer. Want a high-shine look instead? See Safecoat EcoLacq Gloss.
Colors
Search the Color IS color chart by color name or number, or open the chart and click a swatch: the color's number and name then show next to the size you chose. Colors are tinted in 1 gallon cans. You can also enter another brand's color code. We tint with the AFM base your color requires, and the price shown includes the tinting charge. Quarts are sold in Pure White only. Tinted paint is made to order, adds about 5-10 business days, and cannot be returned. Colors from other brands are matched by computer formula and are close, but not guaranteed to be exact.

Sizes
- 1 quart (Pure White)
- 1 gallon (Pure White or tinted)
Use On
Wood, new or previously finished: cabinetry, doors, paneling, furniture and railings. Tintable in all four AFM bases (Pastel, Tint, Deep and Accent).
Coverage
Roughly 300-400 square feet per gallon; porous surfaces sit at the low end of that range.
Drying/Curing Time
A second coat can go on after at least 4 hours, but AFM's best-results advice is to give it 8 hours or more. These times assume a dry surface, moving fresh air, moderate humidity and temperatures above 55°F. Heavy coats, high humidity or other abnormal conditions make it dry and cure more slowly. AFM's spec sheet gives no full-cure period.
Clean-Up
Wash brushes, rollers and spray equipment in warm, soapy water before the paint dries on them. Keep leftover paint in an airtight container for later use. To throw paint away, let it harden first (stir kitty litter into the can, or spread it on cardboard to dry). Never pour paint into a sink or toilet.
Thinning
When spraying, you may thin with as much as 1/2 pint of water per gallon if needed.
Surface Preparation
Remove dirt, grease, mildew and oil, and make sure the surface is dry. Prime bare wood with Safecoat EcoLacq Sandable Primer and let it dry completely; prime previously painted surfaces with Safecoat Transitional Primer. Best conditions: a dry surface, fresh air movement, 30-70% relative humidity and 55-85°F.
Application
Ventilate well. Stir thoroughly before you start and keep stirring as you work, because the color settles. Apply by brush, roller or airless sprayer, building the finish in thin coats rather than heavy ones. For airless spraying, AFM specifies a 17/1000 to 21/1000 tip (reversible tips work best) and a 30-mesh high-pressure filter; hold the gun about 18" away and overlap each pass by 1/4 to 1/2 of the fan width. Wear a painter's mask whenever you spray.
Physical Data
VOC: 74 g/L (material), 182 g/L (less water), per AFM's 2025 spec sheet. HAPs: zero. Low odor, mildly alkaline, water dilutable. Sheen at 60°: 5-10.
Limitations
Do not apply when the indoor temperature is below 55°F, and never let the product freeze. Keep the product free of contamination. AFM's spec sheet lists no other limitations; see the Safety Data Sheet for handling and storage.
Health Precautions
Store the container sealed tightly where children cannot get to it, never swallow the product, protect it from freezing and work with plenty of ventilation. Wear a painter's mask when spraying. If you are chemically sensitive, always test for personal tolerance.
Limited Liability
Safecoat products are guaranteed not to be defective when properly applied. Liability express or implied is limited to replacement of product or refund of purchase price and does not include liability for labor costs or consequential damages. Variable factors out of manufacturer's control, such as environmental conditions, application techniques, and surface conditions are critical to results obtained. Users are expected to exercise reasonable care to determine suitability of the product for each application. We particularly recommend that users always test in small inconspicuous areas before applying to the entire surface.
