More About Sweet Pickins Tung Oil
Most finishes sit on top of the wood. Tung oil works the opposite way. It penetrates deep into the fibers and, once cured, becomes part of the wood itself, which leaves a matte, hand-rubbed surface that resists water and alcohol.
Sweet Pickins Tung Oil rubs in like an oil and dries hard like a varnish. There is no sanding between coats, and you avoid brush marks, runs, and streaks. It works on any species of wood and complements Milk Paint finishes beautifully.
The range of projects is wide. Use it on cutting boards and wooden toys once fully cured, or refresh teak. It also seals outdoor furniture painted with Milk Paint, and even concrete floors and countertops for a matte, non-slip surface.
Here at Eco Building Products, we offer Sweet Pickins Tung Oil in two formulas.
-
Pure Tung Oil: 100% pure, all-natural, high-grade, hard-drying finishing oil with no drying or thinning agents. It can be thinned 1:1 with mineral spirits or a citrus solvent to make it easier to apply, improve penetration and speed up drying. Cleans up with hot water and dish soap.
-
Tung Oil Blend: half pure, high-grade Tung Oil and half all-natural, food-safe citrus oil, with no added driers. The citrus oil acts as a carrier, helping the Tung Oil penetrate deeper and more quickly. Ready to use. Cleans up with mineral spirits.
Why Tung Oil
- Can be built up with additional coats for a tougher, more water-resistant finish.
- Unlike finishes that sit on the surface, Tung Oil penetrates deep into the wood fibers and, when fully cured, becomes part of the wood itself, with a beautiful matte-luster, hand-rubbed look.
- No sanding, brush marks, runs or streaks. It's water- and alcohol-resistant, and rubs in like an oil while drying hard like a varnish.
- An excellent sealer for outdoor furniture painted with milk paint, and great for refreshing teak.
- Suitable for virtually any species of wood, plus cutting boards and wooden toys. It can also seal concrete floors and countertops with a matte-luster, non-slip surface.
-
100% food-safe after curing, which takes approximately 2 weeks.
-
Coverage: approximately 50 sq. ft. per pint, 100 sq. ft. per quart and 400 sq. ft. per gallon.
Directions
Apply with a clean, dry cotton cloth or brush over milk-painted, stained or raw wood. Allow the oil to penetrate for 5–10 minutes, then wipe away any excess. For more water resistance and durability, apply additional coats, allowing 2–3 hours between coats. Tung Oil typically dries to the touch within a day and reaches final hardness after about 2 weeks of curing. Reapply when the surface begins to look dry.
Warning
Tung Oil Blend, and Pure Tung Oil that has been thinned with a solvent, are oil-based products that can spontaneously combust under certain conditions. Pure Tung Oil on its own is not combustible. Dispose of all oil- or solvent-soaked rags in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid. Never leave them bunched up or throw them directly into a household trash can, especially in hot climates.
