AFM Safecoat WaterShield Low-VOC Water Repellent Sealer
Safecoat WaterShield is a clear, versatile, controlled-penetration low VOC water repelling sealer, which
provides an invisible barrier against water and resists oils, grease and similar liquids. WaterShield is
non-toxic, non-flammable, lead-free and formaldehyde-free, and does not contain surface contaminating
silicones, making it a desirable coating for interior or exterior use. May be used on painted surfaces
and may be painted over when dry. Dries clear and does not discolor. Contains 2g/l VOC content.
Safecoats WaterShield has excellent adhesion and is easy to apply. In addition to sealing and providing
a protective barrier against water migration, WaterShield
helps to
harden, dust-proof and control efflorescence in masonry surfaces.
Usage
Safecoat WaterShield can be used on porous, cementitious materials such as concrete, stucco, brick,
block, terrazzo and unglazed tile. Can also be used to add water repellency to exterior vertical wood
siding when applied over AFM Safecoat
DuroStain.
Sizes
Maintenance
For surfaces originally treated with AFM Safecoat WaterShield, consider using
AFM Safecoat
WaterStop.
Coverage
One gallon of Safecoat WaterShield covers approximately 250-300 square feet in one coat depending on
method of application and surface porosity. Thinning: no reduction is required.
Surface Preparations
All surfaces must be clean, dry, free from dust, dirt, loose sand, mildew, efflorescence or any other
foreign matter. The pH of the material to be sealed must be as close to neutral as possible, and
definitely below 10. If the surface has been acid washed, for example to remove efflorescence, it
must be thoroughly clean water rinsed and neutralized. Similarly, once mildew has been removed, for
example by washing with chlorinated household bleach, the surface must be thoroughly rinsed with
water and all bleach residue removed. Always use care with bleach and acid, and be sure to read and
follow all warnings, label instructions and MSDS. Power wash, brush or scrape all surfaces and we
sure to have a good, sound substrate before the application of Safecoat WaterShield. Repair cracks,
holes and repaint concrete block if necessary.
WARNING: Caution must be used when removing coating from existing surfaces. Surfaces should be
checked for lead content. Sanding may create dust or dust particles that may contain lead, a
hazardous substance. Avoid the creation and breathing of any dust particles. Always wear protective
equipment. Breathing or eating lead-containing dust or debris can cause health problems, especially
in children or pregnant women.
Application
Always use adequate ventilation. Apply one coat with brush, roller, lambswool applicator or low-pressure
spray. When applying on vertical surface, start at the lower level and spray upwards. Flood until
Safecoat WaterShield runs to assure complete saturation. On horizontal surfaces allow to sit for about
ten minutes and remove any excess. Try to avoid puddling. Note: before using, check with water on test
areas to be sure there is penetration. If there is none, do not use. Note: these instructions are
intended to be general only and not exhaustive. The applicator should determine which preparation and
techniques are best suited to the specific surface.
Clean Up and Curing
Clean tools and equipment while still wet with a solution of SafeChoice Super Clean and warm water.
Drying/Curing Time: Under normal conditions, Safecoat WaterShield dries within two hours and cures hard
in 24 hours. Normal conditions include a clean, dry surface, access to fresh air flow, a dust free
environment, moderate humidity and temperatures above 55 degrees F. Thick application, high humidity or
conditions other than normal will cause Safecoat WaterShield to dry and cure more slowly.
