AFM Safecoat All Purpose Exterior Satin Paint
AFM Safecoat All Purpose Exterior Satin is a low VOC exterior paint (8 g/L) for primed exterior walls, plaster, masonry, woodwork and metal that need a tough, weather-resistant satin finish with strong film build. AFM rates it as resistant to blistering and fading, with excellent hiding power.
It goes on primed exterior walls, cured plaster, masonry, woodwork and metal. With just 8 g/L VOC, no hazardous air pollutants and no formaldehyde preservatives, it is a lower-impact way to protect the outside of a building, and brushes and rollers rinse clean with soap and water.
Make sure the surface is primed, clean and completely dry before you start. AFM's current spec sheet does not name a specific primer for this paint; ask us if you need help choosing one for your surface.
Colors
Search the Color IS color chart by color name or number, or open the chart and click a swatch: the color's number and name then show next to the size you chose. Colors are tinted in 1 gallon and 5 gallon sizes; if a color cannot be made in 5 gallons, the page tells you. You can also enter another brand's color code. We tint with the AFM base your color requires, and the price shown includes the tinting charge. Tinted paint is made to order, adds about 5-10 business days, and cannot be returned. Colors from other brands are matched by computer formula and are close, but not guaranteed to be exact.
Sheen
Sizes
- 1 quart (Pure White)
- 1 gallon (Pure White or tinted)
- 5 gallon (Pure White, or tinted on the Tint, Deep or Accent base)
Use On
Exterior walls once properly primed, plaster that has fully cured and been primed (pH under 10), masonry, woodwork and metal.
Coverage
Expect roughly 300-400 square feet per gallon; more porous surfaces fall toward the low end.
Drying/Curing Time
Allow at least 4 hours between coats. Full cure and bond take 7 days. Heavy coats, high humidity or other less-than-ideal conditions slow drying and curing.
Clean-Up
Wash brushes, rollers and equipment in warm, soapy water before the paint dries. Keep leftover paint in an airtight container to use later. To throw paint away, first let it harden (stir kitty litter into the can, or spread it on cardboard to dry). Never pour paint into a sink or toilet.
Thinning
Only when spraying: add water as needed, up to 1/2 pint per gallon.
Surface Preparation
Remove dirt, grease, mildew and oil, and let the surface dry completely before painting. Surfaces should be properly primed. AFM's spec sheet lists ideal painting conditions as a dry surface, fresh air movement, 30-70% relative humidity and 55-85°F.
Application
Mix thoroughly, then apply by brush, roller or airless sprayer. For airless spraying, fit a reversible tip sized 17/1000 to 21/1000 and a 30-mesh high-pressure filter, hold the gun about 18" away, overlap each pass by 1/4 to 1/2 of the fan, and wear a painter's mask.
Physical Data
VOC: 8 g/L (material). HAPs: zero. Sheen at 60°: 20-30. Low odor, mildly alkaline, white. Water dilutable.
Limitations
Paint only within the spec sheet's conditions: 55-85°F, 30-70% relative humidity and a dry surface. The sheet also says not to apply below 55°F and not to let the paint freeze. Safecoat paints contain no formaldehyde preservatives, so keep the can sealed and avoid contaminating it. See the Safety Data Sheet for handling and storage.
Health Precautions
As with any coating, keep the can tightly closed and away from children, and do not swallow. Provide good ventilation, and wear a painter's mask when spraying. People with chemical sensitivities should test the paint for personal tolerance before use.
Limited Liability
Safecoat products are guaranteed not to be defective when properly applied. Liability express or implied is limited to replacement of product or refund of purchase price and does not include liability for labor costs or consequential damages. Variable factors out of manufacturer's control, such as environmental conditions, application techniques, and surface conditions are critical to results obtained. Users are expected to exercise reasonable care to determine suitability of the product for each application. We particularly recommend that users always test in small inconspicuous areas before applying to the entire surface.
