AFM Safecoat 2K Pro Finish Two-Part Water-Based Urethane
AFM Safecoat 2K Pro Finish Urethane is a 2K (two-component) water-based polyurethane: an aliphatic urethane sealer for surfaces that need more chemical resistance and toughness than a one-part clear coat gives. For a one-part clear finish on wood floors and furniture, see Safecoat Polyureseal BP.
The finish is water-based and cleans up with soap and water. In AFM's tests it passed 24-hour household spill tests (vinegar, citrus and grape juices, ketchup, hot coffee, olive oil and 100-proof alcohol) with no effect, and it showed no effect after 4-hour spot tests with xylene, brake fluid, ammonia and strong alkali.
Each kit pairs Part A with a smaller Part B. Once combined, the batch stays workable for 24 hours; it won't harden in the pail when that time runs out, and AFM says leftover material can be brought back by adding Part B at a 10:1 or 11:1 ratio.
Sheen
Sizes
- 1 gallon kit (128 oz: Part A 117 oz, Part B 11 oz), Gloss or Satin
Use On
Interior and exterior woodwork, cabinets, concrete floors, walkways, pavers and patios. AFM rates adhesion as excellent on concrete, stucco, plaster, mortar, untreated cold-rolled steel, Bonderite 100 and 1000, tin plate, untreated and anodized aluminum, polycarbonate and high-density polyethylene, and as selective on ABS, nylon and flexible vinyl. It can be used over acrylics.
Coverage
Up to about 400 square feet per gallon on smooth surfaces and 250-350 square feet per gallon on rough ones; porosity and profile change the figure. Two thin coats give the best result.
Drying/Curing Time
Dry in about 30 minutes, ready to recoat in 4 hours and ready for use in 12 hours. Weather, air movement and temperature all change these times. At 70°F and 50% relative humidity, AFM measures set-to-touch under 15 minutes, tack-free under 20 minutes and dry-hard under 30 minutes.
Pot Life
24 hours after mixing. The product does not harden or solidify when the pot life ends; after 24 hours it can be reactivated by adding Part B at a mix ratio of 10:1 or 11:1.
Clean-Up
Wash tools and hands with warm soapy water, then rinse well.
Thinning
Not recommended.
Surface Preparation
Clean off oil, grease and anything else that could keep the coating from bonding. Concrete floors must be structurally sound and cured for at least 28 days; test for moisture vapor drive per ASTM D4263. Mechanical profiling is the preferred method: abrade the floor until it feels like medium-grit sandpaper, taking off any curing or parting compounds, surface hardeners and old floor coatings. Where mechanical profiling isn't practical, bare concrete can be acid-etched once it is thoroughly clean: mix 1 part 10% muriatic acid with 1 part water, let it work for 10-15 minutes, rinse, neutralize with baking soda or soda ash, and rinse again. A correctly etched floor feels like fine to medium sandpaper. Let the surface dry completely before coating, and always try a test area first to check appearance and adhesion.
Application
Do not shake the containers, which traps air bubbles; stir gently and thoroughly instead. Brush, roll (1/4" or 3/8" nap cover) or spray, using a clean brush or roller, and apply at least two thin coats. Choose a warm, clear, sunny day, out of direct sun. Apply above 50°F. Avoid late-day application and any time dew, mist, fog or rain is likely, and skip coating if rain is forecast within 24 hours. Moisture can damage the fresh film and dampness can dull the gloss. Cold, excess humidity or a sudden temperature drop will affect the finish.
Film and Physical Properties
Reverse impact 10 ft-lb. Taber abrasion (1000 g / 1000 cycles): 4% weight loss. Tensile strength 6000 psi; elongation 40% (ASTM D-412). Adhesion 5A by dry tape test (ASTM D-3359) and by wet tape at 24 hours and 4 days. QUV-B weathering, 1000 hours (ASTM D-4587-91): over 92% gloss retention, 1.6 Delta E color change. Solids 32-34% by weight and 31-33% by volume. Maximum VOC under 100 g/L.
Chemical Resistance
4-hour spot test, no effect: 50% sodium hydroxide, 10% acetic acid, 30% ammonia, xylene, brake fluid. MEK causes softening. 24-hour tests per ANSI/KCMA A161.1-1990, no effect: vinegar, lemon juice, orange juice, grape juice, ketchup, coffee at 115°F, olive oil, 100-proof alcohol; mustard (1 hour) no effect. Passes 10 hot and cold check cycles.
Health Precautions
Keep containers closed and out of the reach of children, and do not let the product freeze. Provide good ventilation and avoid contact with eyes and skin. Read the Safety Data Sheet for the sheen you buy before use. If you are chemically sensitive, always test for personal tolerance.
Limited Liability
Safecoat products are guaranteed not to be defective when properly applied. Liability express or implied is limited to replacement of product or refund of purchase price and does not include liability for labor costs or consequential damages. Variable factors out of manufacturer's control, such as environmental conditions, application techniques, and surface conditions are critical to results obtained. Users are expected to exercise reasonable care to determine suitability of the product for each application. We particularly recommend that users always test in small inconspicuous areas before applying to the entire surface.
