More About Extra Bond
Milk Paint bonds beautifully to raw wood without a primer. Slick or sealed surfaces are a different story. Extra Bond is the solution: a water-based, VOC-free, low-odor, non-toxic polymer additive that greatly improves adhesion to non-porous surfaces and close-grained hardwoods.
Adding Extra Bond to milk paint helps it adhere to previously finished and other non-porous surfaces, such as:
- Glass
- Baked enamel
- Primed metal
- Laminate
- Oil or latex paint
- Varnished, shellacked, or polyurethaned surfaces
- Many plastics

Mixing order matters. Prepare your Milk Paint according to the directions first, then stir in the Extra Bond. Adding it to dry powder before the water creates a clumpy mess.
The standard ratio is two parts mixed paint to one part Extra Bond. If a surface looks especially iffy, you can go up to a 1:1 ratio. If you still want some chipping for a distressed look, many painters use half or even a quarter of the recommended amount.
Here at Eco Building Products, we offer Extra Bond in two variants.
-
Sweet Pickins Extra Bond. This is the match for Sweet Pickins Milk Paint, and it is available in four sizes. Use it when you are painting a glossy dresser or a previously painted cabinet in one of the boutique colors. It keeps your first coat from lifting on tricky substrates.
-
Old Fashioned Milk Paint Extra Bond. This version pairs with the original formula that the Old Fashioned Milk Paint Company has made since 1974. It suits custom furniture builders, interior designers, and DIYers working on difficult surfaces. It cleans up with soap and water.
Extra Bond is only needed in the first coat. Wait 24 hours before applying the second coat, since recoating sooner can reactivate the bond and cause the first layer to lift. Mixed paint with Extra Bond lasts only a few hours before it starts to gel, so mix only what you need for that first coat.
Begin with a thoroughly cleaned surface, free of dirt and oils, and use a cleaner that leaves no oily residue. Apply at temperatures above 60 degrees and never let Extra Bond freeze, since it becomes unusable. Because needs vary by surface, a small mock-up on the actual substrate is always worth doing first.
