Federal Government Incentive Programs

US Department of Treasury: Personal Income Tax Credit

  • The Personal Income Tax credit covers 30% of the cost of a renewable energy project as an end-of-year write-off
  • Available to the Residential sector only
  • Renewable energy systems such as solar water heat, photovoltaics, wind, fuel cells, geothermal heat pumps & other solar electrical technologies are among approved systems

US Department of Treasury: Renewable Energy Grant

  • The USDT Renewable Energy Grant offers 10-30% grants for the implementation of renewable energy systems
  • Grant available to Commercial, Industrial and Agricultural sectors only
  • Approved renewable energies include solar water heat, solar space heat, photovoltaics, fuel cell, wind and qualified facilities (at 30% grant level), and geothermal heat pumps, microturbines & combined heat and power (at 10% grant level)

US Department of Agriculture: Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) Grant

  • The REAP grant program covers 25% of the cost to install renewable energy systems
  • Grant available to Commercial, Schools, Local, State & Tribal Government, Rural Electric Cooperatives Agricultural & Public Power Entity sectors
  • Eligible systems include solar water heat, solar space heat, solar thermal electric, photovoltaics and wind.

US Department of Agriculture: Rural Energy for America (REAP) Loan

  • The REAP loan program guarantees 100% up-front loan backing for a renewable energy project including improvements in energy efficiency
  • Loan is available in the Residential sector, to farmers and small businesses in rural communities
  • Eligible systems include solar water heat, solar space heat, solar thermal electric, photovoltaics & wind

EPA Green Power Partnership: Renewable Energy Certificates (REC’s)

  • REC’s are the property rights to the environmental, social and other non-power qualities of renewable electricity generation and can be sold separately from the underlying physical electricity associated with a renewable-based generation source
  • Available to Residential sectors
  • Technologies creating renewable energy include photovoltaic, solar, wind, geothermal and low-impact hydroelectric

State of Michigan Energy Credit Programs 

Department of Energy: Energy Star Michigan Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program

 

  • The Michigan Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program offers various Energy Star approved appliances at a rebate of $50 to $1200.
  • Available to the Residential sector only
  • Certified appliances include refrigerators, clothes washers, dishwashers, propane & oil furnaces, solar hot water heaters & propane hot water heaters

Consumer Energy Utility Incentive (EARP)

  • The Consumer Energy Utility Incentive allows owners of a photovoltaic energy system to sell their kilo-watt hours to the utility company.
  • Commercial, Industrial, Residential, Non-Profit, Schools, Local, State & Federal Government, Multi-Family Residential, and Institutional sectors are all eligible
  • Residential systems will sell for $0.525 per kWh. (Starting 2010)
  • Non-residential systems will sell for $0.375 per kWh. (Starting 2010)

Solar Currents: DTE Utility Rebate Program

  • DTE’s Solar Currents Utility Rebate Program offers a rebate per DC watt for the new or existing installation of energy systems
  • Available to commercial, residential, Non-Profit, Schools, Local, State & Federal Government, Agricultural & Institutional sectors who are DTE Energy Electric consumers
  • A new system pays $2.40 per DC watt, up to $48,000. This number is reduced for existing systems. DTE will also pay $0.11 per kWh produced.

Michigan Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP)

  • WAP provides free home energy conservation services to reduce energy use and lower utility bills
  • Low-income Michigan homeowners and renters are eligible
  • Home energy services include wall insulation, attic insulation and ventilation, foundation insulation, air leakage reduction, smoke detectors & dryer venting

Michigan Saves Program

  • The Michigan Saves Program provides energy efficient products that are purchased with no up-front payment and no customer debt obligation
  • Available to the Residential sector only
