The Old Fashioned Milk Paint team tested expensive HVLP guns and inexpensive basic guns, and nothing else worked well. This is the one that did.

It is a simple gun with just two adjustments. The factory settings are usually just right, so you can start spraying without a long tuning session. It also handles lacquer, stains, clear coats, enamels, and latex, which makes it useful well beyond Milk Paint.

You will need an air compressor to run it. The gun operates anywhere from 30 to 90 PSI. The kit includes the spray gun, a wire brush, a handle toothbrush, a filter funnel, and a 1/4 NPT quick coupler plug.

After testing both expensive HVLP spray guns and basic models, we found this simple spray gun to work exceptionally well with Milk Paint. It features two easy adjustments and typically works well straight out of the box.

This versatile spray gun can also be used with lacquer, stains, clear coats, enamels, and latex. Avoid moving the blender up and down, as this can incorporate too much air into the paint.

Allow the paint to sit for approximately 5–10 minutes so it can naturally thicken.

Add water one tablespoon at a time until the paint reaches the proper consistency. For spraying, aim for a consistency similar to a runny, melted milkshake. Thinner paint sprays more easily, but if it is too thin, coverage will suffer and the paint may run. If it is too thick, it will not spray properly. Straining the paint before adding it to the spray gun cup is recommended. With this gun, straining is generally unnecessary when using an immersion blender, but hand-mixed paint should be strained. Any clumps can clog the nozzle and require frequent cleaning.

Adjust the paint viscosity as needed to achieve an even spray pattern. Always test the spray on a scrap piece of cardboard or wood before applying it to your project.

Spray using long, even strokes with a slight overlap on each pass. Keep the gun moving continuously to prevent the paint from building up and running.

Spraying takes practice, so experiment on scrap material until you are comfortable with the technique.

Keep in mind that spraying generally uses more paint than brushing, but it can save considerable time.

Clean the spray gun thoroughly after use to prevent Milk Paint from drying and sticking to the metal components.

How-to video coming soon!

Weight

0.48 kg
